Money tips

Budgeting

The 50/30/20 rule

Split monthly income into: 50% needs (rent, food, bills), 30% wants (entertainment, dining), 20% savings and debt payoff. Simple starting point.

Budgeting

Zero-based budget

Give every unit of income a job — rent, food, savings, fun. When income minus outgoings equals zero, nothing gets wasted.

Saving

Pay yourself first

Move money to savings the day you get paid, before you spend. What's left is your real spending money.

Saving

Save windfalls

Bonus, tax refund, gift money? Send at least half to savings automatically. You won't miss what you never adjusted to.

Saving

The 1% challenge

Increase your savings rate by just 1% of income each month. After a year, you'll save over 12% more than when you started.

Decisions

The 24-hour rule

For any non-essential purchase over a day's income, wait 24 hours before deciding. Impulse fades. Real needs survive the wait.

Decisions

Cost per use

A $200 item used 200 times costs $1 per use. A $20 item used twice costs $10 per use. Expensive isn't always wasteful, cheap isn't always smart.

Decisions

Opportunity cost

Every purchase trades for something else. A $500 phone today could be 5 months of savings towards something bigger.

Debt

Avalanche method

Pay minimums on everything. Put every extra unit on the highest-interest debt. It saves the most money over time.

Debt

Snowball method

Pay off smallest debts first, regardless of interest. Quick wins build momentum. Slower mathematically, but works if motivation is the problem.

Debt

Minimum payments trap

Paying only the minimum on a credit card can take decades. Always pay above the minimum if you can.

Emergency

3-6 months rule

Aim for 3-6 months of essential expenses in a separate, easy-to-reach account. It protects you from job loss or big surprises.

Emergency

Keep it boring

An emergency fund isn't for investing. Keep it in a savings account — accessible, stable, safe. Growth comes later.

Spending

Subscription audit

Once a quarter, list every subscription. Cancel anything you haven't used in 30 days. Small leaks sink big boats.

Spending

The coffee trap

A daily $5 coffee is $1,825 a year. Not saying skip it — just know what you're actually paying for it.

Spending

Sleep on it list

Keep a running list of things you want. Wait a week. Cross off what no longer appeals. Buy what survives.

Habit

Track small spends

Snacks, transport, small purchases add up. Logging them for 30 days usually reveals 10-20% of your income you didn't notice.

Long term

Compound interest

Money grows on money. Investing early — even small amounts — beats investing more later. Time is the biggest multiplier.

Long term

Insurance basics

Protect against the big stuff you can't afford to lose (health, home, life if you support others). Skip insurance for small stuff you can replace.

Help

What is SmartSaver?

SmartSaver helps you make better money decisions. Before you buy something, you can check whether it fits your budget. It also tracks savings goals, logs daily spends, and offers simple calculators.

Everything is on your phone. No accounts, no servers, no tracking.

Decide — check a purchase

Think of it like asking a friend before you spend. Fill in:

• What you want to buy
• How much it costs
• Your current balance
• Your monthly income
• Your essential monthly bills

Tap "Can I afford this?" and SmartSaver tells you one of three things: Yes (safe to buy), Risky (you could, but your buffer shrinks), or Not yet (you don't have enough).

After checking, you can Save the decision, save it as a Template to reuse, or Share it as an image.

Save — savings goals

Set a target (like "New laptop — $500 by March 2026"). Every time you save real money, tap "Add money" and enter the amount. SmartSaver shows how far you are, and suggests a weekly amount to hit your goal on time.

Today — log your spends

Each day, log what you spent (even small amounts). It takes 5 seconds. Over a week, SmartSaver shows your spending trend and compares it to last week.

This is not a full expense tracker — it's a lightweight way to notice where your money goes.

Tools — eight calculators

Savings, budget, debt payoff, discount, percentage, emergency fund, tip, and currency conversion. Pick from the dropdown and enter your numbers. Each one works offline.

Streaks

Every day you use the app (log a spend, check a purchase, add to a goal), your streak grows. It's a small reminder to stay aware of your money.

Is my data private?

Yes. Everything you enter stays on your device only. Nothing is sent anywhere. If you clear your browser or app data, you lose your SmartSaver data — so use More → Your data → Export backup first.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once installed as an app. All features work without internet.
